Consequences tells of a large, poor Canadian family living in rural Quebec. The eldest son, Jean, and sister Manon are physically abused as children on a daily basis by their drunken father, leading to Jean killing him. From this moment on, Jean takes on the complete responsibility for his family, stealing, lying, and cheating as a way of life in order to feed hungry mouths. This behavior reflecting on his character for the rest of his life. An unhappy marriage and his ultimate love for Laurel, a divorced cultured English woman, is a mix of emotional fulfillment for both along with an impossible situation. Jean has two children whom he adores, and stays in his loveless marriage for them. Jean's eventual imprisonment and Laurel's unknown pregnancy with Jean sets into motion a devastating path to heartbreak.
